ABSTRACT
Sub-Saharan Africa faces persistent challenges in achieving food security under the pressure of climate change, population growth, and resource degradation. This study explores innovative and context-specific approaches to sustainable agriculture that enhance productivity, build resilience, and support environmental stewardship. We synthesise evidence from recent empirical studies, field experiments, and policy analyses to evaluate the effectiveness of climate-smart agricultural practices, integrated soil fertility management, agroecological intensification, and digital innovations. Results indicate that these approaches substantially improve crop yields, water-use efficiency, and household incomes while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Success, however, depends on enabling policies, inclusive extension services, access to finance, and strong multi-stakeholder collaboration. We conclude by outlining strategic recommendations for scaling proven solutions and fostering homegrown innovation to achieve resilient, sustainable food systems across the region.
